From print to digital

TES Global, a leading publication in the education field, had a big goal: completely shifting priorities from print to digital. Some systems existed digitally in the form of proprietary digital systems, but without much in the form of interoperability. A central, streamlined platform that covered their entire publishing platform was needed, while maintaining all content and retaining users. Fluxus was selected as a partner for this migration.

A rolling migration

A key requirement was for a rolling migration of all current web features such as their site, data, users, comments, and URL redirection. The main publishing workflow had to change as well to prioritize digital workflows, and this all had to be done while maintaining search rankings.

Fluxus migrated 120,000 published articles (from as far back as 1994) in an automated process, transforming aspects of the content in the process. One of TES’s previously-used CMS’s stored HTML as XML, and lots of “non-content” like HTML and CSS tags had been accumulated. Fluxus cleaned data through scripts and transformed everything into far more usable forms that fit well with the new system. In addition, an image library of over 100,000 files was migrated.

A consolidated publishing platform

For the new platform, Fluxus built using a combination of Drupal open-source and AWS. Development was led using an impact-driven Kanban-based process to focus on high-priority items and emphasize project velocity. User interface was designed using Lean UX methodologies, keeping the process lightweight while still providing users exactly what they need.

Outcome

The rolling migration was a success, with TES being able to maintain users during and after the transformation. The system was able to take advantage of everything the legacy systems were accomplishing, but from a single source.
